The Howard Family

John Howard is a friend of a friend from London. He lives with his family in the North Bronx. We were invited to share Thanksgiving dinner with him, his wife Anna and their daughter Iris. A koscha turkey and a few glasses of wine led to a lovely warm evening.

Rachel Kara Perez

Rachel is the most fantastic singer, we saw her perform with the Cuban Jazz Orchestra last week and it blew us away.

An encounter of sorts

I took a journey up to the south bank yesterday to have a look at the Thames Festival. On my way home I changed at London Bridge, where I found that everyone was sombre and smoking. Even though it is now against the law to smoke on train stations somebody must have been turning a blind eye, they cant have not been seen the station is covered in CCTV. I thought this guy was interesting, he was very short and looked particularly pensive about something.

This is a very interesting picture for me, once again we have the man on the right, now walking towards the camera. This time though, I have shown more of what is going on around him. We see the woman with the dark hair to the left, she looks as if she is being restrained by the man she is with and she is looking directly into the lens. I didn't follow the short man any longer and instead followed what the man and woman were doing. They got on the same train as me, the woman stared at me for almost the whole journey. I didn't actually realise that I had taken this picture until this morning, perhaps I would have been more thoughtful about what was going on at the time if I had known about this image.

A lost feeling

Following completing my year course in photography at the end of last week I have been filled with a feeling of emptiness. My mind has gone somewhere else, the drive and determination that I had up until literally the end of last week seems to have gone, or is hidden from my concious for some reason. I have come down to Falmouth to stay with a friend for a couple of days in an attempt to re-find my motivation. I am returning to London tomorrow night where hopefully something will be waiting for me subconciously, although I am going to make a concious effort to sort things out.

YEAR by YEAR

YEAR by YEAR

For some time I have been frequenting Deptford market in south east London. Each time I go I tend to almost always come back with a selection of things, some interesting, some not so. Perhaps the most intrigueing thing I have picked up was a diary kept by a woman between 1985 and 1989. The majority of her diary entries are centred around her observations of the weather and an almost obsessive documentation of the temperature. Although occasionally something quite interesting happens, for example she takes a trip to Crystal Palace. This is of interest to me because as it was to her, it is now somewhere that is familiar to me. I now have been given an urge to breath life back into her life by photographically re-enacting certain moments from her diary. The whole process has taken almost two months of mental preparation, only following a lot of thought have I been able to visualize the scenes and be happy within myself that it will work visually for me and for the viewer once it is displayed (this is something that I intend to display, and have an interactive element). Everything is now ready to begin, the outfit, model, locations and the cameras. I will be using 4 different cameras on each scene so as to give myself room when it comes to the final selection process and deciding which images to display. I will be using one digital SLR, an Olympus OM1, a sequence camera (A camera that takes four images on one negative and an Olympus trip 35 (also a purchase from Deptford market).

It's been a while

This is my ongoing project, it is titled "YEAR by YEAR". I have been reinacting scenes from a diary that I bought from Deptford market a couple of months ago.

A crazy day

Had an absolutely mad day yesterday with a couple of friends up in east London. The people we met were mad!

I think because these were people that I met not with the sole desire to take a picture of them, the way that I have taken their photograph reflects a very strong feeling that they are comfortable with me.

The beggining

A photo blog is something that I believe can be used as a great way to show my work. I am very keen on feedback, good or bad and hopefully this will be a good way to get it. Enjoy what you see.
